Breathe Easier, with an EV

The American Lung Association has weighed in electric vehicles and clean power with an impressive report about EVs, children and clean air. The findings? Switching to zero emissions transportation and electricity generation between now and 2050, would prevent an estimated 3 million pediatric asthmas attacks and millions of other negative health impacts in the U.S. on people 18 years of age or younger. It’s quite an argument for adopting more EVs and moving to zero-emissions electric power generation (including nuclear).

Kids and bad air is a real problem. The number of American children growing up in areas with poor air quality is shocking; 27.2 million American kids under 18 currently live in a community with at least one failing grade on air quality from the American Lung Association’s 2023 “State of the Air” report. That’s over a third of all U.S. children.

Can’t we do better?.

EVs are not only fun to drive, fast, quiet and require less regular maintenance, they also help dramatically increase air quality over time, something that is really important for children with developing lungs. Seems like an no brainer to me and yet another powerful reason to put the tribal politics that have gridlocked America aside on EVs. After all, both Democratic and Republican kids ought to be able to breathe.
